Gooch to stick around a while

Colm Cooper: still has a great deal to offer club and county
Colm Cooper: still has a great deal to offer club and county

KERRY fans can relax – Gooch is going nowhere.

Despite a report on an online sports site suggesting that Colm Cooper was hanging up his boots, the Kerry ace has indicated that he hopes to continue playing with Kerry “for another while.”

The eight-time All-Star has played at the top level with the Kingdom senior team for an amazing 15 years and although he is now 33, he clearly believes he still has something to offer – and Kerry fans will concur.

The popular Dr Crokes star told RTÉ’s GAA reporter Brian Carty: “To play 15 years with Kerry has been a great time for me and, who knows, hopefully it might continue for another while”.

He acknowledged that a number of his long-time team-mates have difficult decisions to make about whether or not to retire and he specifically mentioned Kieran Donaghy Marc Ó Sé and Aidan O’Mahony.

“They’ve All-Ireland medals in their back pocket. They are probably the people with decisions to make over the next couple of weeks,” he said, adding that they are right to take time to think it through instead of making any rash decisions.

“They know best, whether the body is up to it, whether the hunger is there and I’m sure they’ll make the right decision and we’ll know over the next few weeks.”

Cooper will line out for Dr Crokes in next Sunday’s County Senior Football Championship final clash with Kenmare District and a victory in that encounter could see him skipper his county once again nest season.
