123 new cases confirmed in just two days

The majority of patients who had contacted GPs with Covid-like symptoms are not self-isolating

FOLLOWING the shock news that 85 more cases of Covid-19 were reported in the country yesterday, the Department of Health has confirmed a further 38 cases this Friday.

That brings the total number of people infected with the virus to 26,065. No new death was reported today with the number of fatalities remaining at 1,763.

There was no new case either in Kerry where the total number of people that have been infected since the outset remains at 317.

Worryingly, however, a total of 123 new cases of Covid-19 have been reported in the Republic of Ireland over the past two days.

Of today’s 38 cases, 22 are males and 16 are females and the median age is 30 years. 82 per cent of those affected are under 45 years of age.

32 cases are located in Dublin or Kildare and 26 are associated with outbreaks or are close contacts of previously confirmed cases.

Department of Health Acting Chief Medical Officer, Dr Ronan Glynn, said mass testing has now taken place in relation to a number of known outbreaks.

“We may be beginning to see more cases which we cannot link to outbreaks or close contacts. The National Public Health Emergency Team will continue to monitor this situation closely over the coming days,” he added.

Somewhat alarmingly, it emerged today that a survey of GPs has indicated that the vast majority of patients who had contacted them with Covid-like symptoms in the past week had not been self-isolating since the onset of their symptoms.

“The importance of isolating as soon as you have any ‘flu like symptoms cannot be overstated,” Dr Glynn stressed.

“Without this individual action we simply will not break the chains of transmission and we will put many people at risk of infection.

“It is important that people know that there is no charge for GP or testing services relating to Covid-19. Please do not hesitate to contact your GP if you have any concerns,” he pleaded.
