IT is being billed as the Great Killarney Duck Race and it is set to make a splash in the middle of June.
The event will see a return to a traditional form of fundraising by the Kilcummin National School Parents’ Association.
It will be run on June 14 at 6.30pm on the Deenagh River, Port Road, Killarney – starting at the playground bridge– and it is being organised to raise funds that will assist with the purchase of new equipment for the school.
“We were looking for a fun family event that everyone could enter and enjoy to finish off the school year,” said Derek O Leary, Chairperson of the Kilcummin NS Parents’ Association.
First prize is a one-night family break in Kilkenny with additional prizes for the second and third place ducks and the fee to adopt a duck for the race is just €5.
“We’ll have a best dressed duck costume prize for someone who makes the effort to go a bit quackers on the evening of the race,” said Derek.
The organisers are expecting to sell in the region of 300 ducks for the event and they can be purchased in Kilcummin Post Office and the Dungeon Bookshop in Killarney. They will also have a pop-up shop at the Market Cross on Saturday next from 2pm to 4pm. Ducks can also be bought from 5.30pm to 6.30pm on the evening of the race.
