Alex and Callum fire ‘The Sem’ to big win

Alex Hennigan: Scored 2-4 for The Sem

Now a regular feature in the Dr Crokes senior squad, young Alex Hennigan was one of the heroes of the hour for Killarney’s St Brendan’s College this Wednesday as they thumped Coláiste Choilm of Ballincollig in their opening defence of their Munster Colleges SFC title at Banteer.

They served notice – and then some – of their intentions to go all the way this season as they endeavour to make up for the disappointment of last year’s All-Ireland SFC Hogan Cup final loss to Nass CBS.

On course for three provincial championships in a row, The Sem had a whopping 16-point winning margin at the final whistle and, in the process, they bulged the net on six occasions in a facile 6-9 to 0-11 victory.

Full forward Alex Hennigan, one of five players from last year’s starting side still involved, was one of the standout performers with an impressive personal haul of 2-4, two points of which came from frees and another from a mark.

Spa’s Timmy Moynihan: Played well

Both his first goal, after 10 minutes, and the second in the 28th, followed great approach work by another eye-catching young star, Glenflesk’s Callum Cronin, who himself contributed a stunning 2-1 to break Ballincollig resolve.

Despite playing against the significant elements in the opening half, the Sem overcame a strong Ballingollig surge to lead by a single point, 2-6 to 0-10, at the break but, thanks to staunch defence and dominance around the middle, they restricted Coláiste Choilm to just a single point in the second half.

St Brendan’s were not as score shy, however, and further goals from Spa’s Luke O’Neill and Glenflesk’s Jamie Moynihan, in addition to points from richly promising Fossa attacker Ted O’Gorman and Spa’s Timmy Moynihan – a brother of Kerry player Dara – powered them to victory.

St Brendan’s College scorers: A Hennigan 2-4 (0-2 frees, 0-1 mark); C Cronin 2-1; J Moynihan 1-0; L O’Neill 1-0; C Fleming 0-1; T Moynihan 0-1; O Fleming 0-1; T O’Gorman 0-1.
