A MAN who was seriously assaulted on the street during a night out is today fighting for his life in hospital.
The incident occurred at The Square in Killorglin at approximately 2.20am on Sunday.
The man, understood to be single, in his 30s and from the Glencar area, suffered serious head injuries in the attack which happened outside a fast food premises.
The victim was removed by ambulance to Kerry General Hospital and was later transferred to University Hospital Cork for specialist treatment. It is understood that he is in a critical condition.
Killarney gardai are investigating and they have asked for any witnesses to the incident to contact them. They believe there was a large number of people in the area when the assault occurred.
They are particularly anxious to hear from any motorist with dash-cam footage of the incident or any taxi drivers who might have been in the area at the time.
The scene of the attack at The Square in Killorglin was preserved overnight and was forensically examined earlier today.
Gardaí have already spoken to a number of witnesses but they are anxious to speak to others who may not have come forward with information.
