Big boost for several community centres in Kerry

A total grant allocation of €1.5 million has been approved for community centres in Kerry.

The funding will be used to upgrade facilities by providing lighting and heating upgrades, solar panels, wall insulation and new toilets.

The funding will come from the Community Centres Investment Fund.

“Our community centers in Kerry are so important in promoting and fostering community spirit, connections and well-being in our county. They are at the heart of our community and this funding will provide a significant uplift to them,” she said.

The funding allocations are as follows:

  • Abbeydorney Parish Hall – €48,000 to fund the installation of new doors windows, solar PV system and to upgrade the plumbing and heating system.
  • Austin Stacks GAA – €32,000 to fund the upgrade of a multi-purpose community room with new flooring, heating and furniture, an upgraded accessible toilet lift and lighting.
  • Ballyheigue Community Centre – over €80,000 to fund a gym roof replacement, solar panel installation and a refurbishment of the sports hall floor.
  • Barraduff Community Centre – close on €46,000 to fund an upgrade including solar panels.
  • Brosna Community Sports Hall – €100,000 to fund energy efficient heating, improved insulation and upgraded toilets
  • Caherciveen Social Services Community Centre – €100,000 to fund the renovation of the upstairs of the building.
  • Castleisland Community Centre – €58,000 to fund solar panels and windows.
  • Glenflesk St Agatha’a GAA Club and Community Centre – €100,000 to fund the renovations in the centre.
  • Killorglin Community Centre – around €82,000 to fund essential maintenance and refurbishment works.
  • Kerry Community Youth Service – close on €99,000 to fund new efficient boilers, solar panels and new doors in Killarney.
  • Knocknagoshel Community Centre – €78,000 to fund the repair of the roof and the insulation of the building.
  • Listry Community Centre – €72,000 to fund the upgrading of the fire alarm system, the installation of solar solar panels and LED lightings, the insulation of the external gable and the upgrade of the kitchen.
  • Rathoonane Community Centre – €90,000 to fund the internal realignment of the ground floor into a single level accessible unit.
  • Spa GAA Club Community Centre – over €81,000 to fund the repair of the roof, the refurbishment of the flooring, the replacement of the heating, the upgrade the lighting and fire doors.
  • St Senan’s Parish Hall – €60,000 to fund the upgrade of all internal doors, the replacement of the ceiling and a new fire alarm system.
  • Tuosist Community Hall – €100,000 to fund the renovation of its bathroom, the installation of showers and flooring, tiling, doors and interior finishes.
  • Annascaul Sports Centre – €87,000 to fund the replacement of exterior fire doors and gutters, roof repairs, installation and new kitchen, LED lights, solar panels and PV panels.
  • Kilmoyley Community Centre – €90,000 to fund the installation of solar panels, heat pump and LED lighting.
  • Ballybunion Community Centre – €100,000 to fund the replacement of the wood floors and install larger windows.

Last November, community centres in Kerry got almost €360,000 to fund minor upgrades worth up to €25,000 each under category one (minor works) of the Community Centres Investment Fund.

Today’s announcement is for funding for community centre upgrades worth up to €100,000 each under category two (major works) of the fund.

Announcing details of the latest funding this Tuesday, Minister for Children, Disability, Equality and Kerry TD Norma Foley, remarked: “Our community centers in Kerry are so important in promoting and fostering community spirit, connections and well-being in our county. They are at the heart of our community and this funding will provide a significant uplift to them,” she said.

The funding was also welcomed by Deputy Michael Cahill and Junior Minister Michael Healy-Rae.
