Breandán takes the helm on new-look council

Newly elected Mayor of Kerry, Cllr Breandán Fitzgerald, addresses today’s council meeting with Kerry County County CEO Martin O’Donoghue by his side

Fianna Fáil councillor, Breandán Fitzgerald, was elected Mayor of Kerry at the first meeting of the new-look county council this Friday afternoon.

As first revealed on KillarneyToday.com earlier in the week, a pact has been agreed between Fianna Fail, Fine Gael and Labour to control who will hold the key positions of power over the next five years.

Fianna Fail won nine seats in this month’s local elections, Fine Gael managed six and Labour held its two seats so the total of 17 was sufficient to control the 33-seat local authority.

A total of 11 of solo candidates, four Sinn Fein councillors and the three Healy-Rae councillors – the latter with the support of Liam Speedy Nolan in Listowel and Sam Locke in Tralee – all tried to cobble together a working majority but the FF-FG-Lab pact won through.

It is understood the arrangement is that Fianna Fail will hold the position of mayor for three years, Fine Gael for two and Labour will have a deputy mayor.

Cllr Fitzgerald, who has been a member of Kerry County Council since 2019, represents the Corca Dhuibhne local electoral area.

A native of Dingle and a native Irish speaker, the 50-year-old is a full-time public representative with a background in tourism.

Cllr Fionnán Fitzgerald: Deputy Mayor

He said it is a privilege to be the first citizen of such a wonderful county.

“My focus in the year ahead will be on promoting the county nationally and internationally, securing increased investment for the county and enhancing the facilities and services which Kerry County Council provides to the people of Kerry.

“I look forward to working closely with council management and with communities across Kerry to achieve our common goals,” said Cllr Fitzgerald.

He follows in the footsteps of his late father and former Fianna Fáil senator, Tom Fitzgerald, who was chairperson of Kerry County Council in 1979-1980.

The new Deputy Mayor of Kerry is Fianna Fail councillor Fionnán Fitzgerald who represents the Castleisland electoral area.
