Bypass will be considered ‘in future years’

Projects at at advanced stage, such as the Macroom bypass, were given priority

While sufficient funding is in place to ensure that the route option phase of the long-promised Farranfore-Killarney bypass can be concluded before the end of this year, delivery of the project will only be considered if the finances are available, Transport Minister, Eamon Ryan, has insisted.

In a letter to Kerry County Council, he said his department and Transport Infrastructure Ireland are in regular communication regarding specific projects and the national roads programme.

He said, as with all roads in the National Development Plan, the N22 Killarney to Farranfore projects “will be kept under review in future years”.

He said the project would be considered in terms of the overall funding available to Transport Infrastructure Ireland.

Minister Ryan said it is his understanding  that sufficient funding is in place to ensure the preferred route can be chosen.

He pointed out that the Government has earmarked €5.1 billion for capital spending on new national roads projects from 2021 to 2030 and the greater portion of that funding will become available in the second half of the decade.

“As a result of this, a prioritisation exercise was necessary. National road funding for 2024 was allocated in a manner which seeks to achieve the protection and renewal of the existing national road network, progressing major projects in or near construction and projects which are pre-construction but well advanced in the development pipeline,” Minister Ryan said.
