PEOPLE in Kerry are getting into debt to pay for the funerals of loved ones, it has emerged.
A Kerry County Council member has told how he is personally aware of an increasing number of individuals and families that have had to borrow money to pay for funerals.
Cllr Michael Cahill said he has also been informed by St Vincent de Paul and community welfare officers that they have seen a dramatic increase in the number of individuals and families coming forward who did not have the funds to cover the cost of funerals.
Cllr Cahill has called on the Minister for Social Protection, Heather Humphreys, to reinstate the bereavement grant that was withdrawn in 2013.
He said the significant increase in funeral costs, the increase in the number of deaths due to Covid-19 and the depressed state of the economy must be taken into consideration.
“There is an obvious demand and the grant should be restored as a matter of priority,” Cllr Cahill remarked.
