Call in Kerry to tackle ‘period poverty’

Cllr Mikey Sheehy: Highlighted the problem

A MEMBER of Kerry County Council has said that it must be recognised and acknowledged that “period poverty” is a very real issue for women in low income households in Kerry.

Cllr Mikey Sheehy said the council has a responsibility to break down the stigma around periods and it must move to help tackle period poverty.

He has asked the council to agree to have free sanitary products available in the toilets of all Kerry County Council buildings.

Cllr Sheehy said the products should also be made available, free of charge, in community centres, swimming pools and libraries.

Meanwhile, Cllr Maura Healy-Rae has asked Kerry County Council to consider subsidising the disposal of continence care products as is the case in other local authorities.
