A KERRY TD has urged the Vintners Federation of Ireland to get behind publicans all over the country, but particularly in rural areas, to give them full support as they prepare to reopen for business on July 20 – if not sooner
Deputy Danny Healy-Rae said the representative body should lobby the government to ensure the pubs are given every support and he can see no reason why they can’t be allowed to open sooner.
“It simply doesn’t make sense that, at present, people can drink alcoholic beverages and have a meal in an establishment but they can’t eat a meal at home and go out for a couple of drinks,” he said.
Deputy Healy-Rae, who resumes his weekly clinic in Scott’s Hotel, Killarney this Saturday, following the enforced lockdown, said some people that might only be able to afford two or three pints after having a meal at home can’t get in anywhere because they are not eating in the pub or restaurant.
“That doesn’t make sense to me. Pubs should be open now the very same as restaurants cum pubs because they have always been regulated. They have provided a massive service for communities and, in particular, rural communities,” he stated.
