HANS Liebherr Road in Killarney was closed to traffic for a number of hours this morning while the fire service and gardai undertook a rescue operation after a car veered off the road and entered the River Deenagh.
The accident occurred shortly before 11.00am and the road reopened at lunchtime.
It is understood the vehicle was travelling from the Michael Moynihan Roundabout in Ballydowney towards Lidl when driver fell ill and the vehicle careered off the road just before the turn-off to the supermarket.
Emergency services were alerted but the rescue operation was made difficult because of the presence of trees and heavy overgrowth which had to be cut back to enable the man to be assisted. There was also a steep embankment leading to the river which complicated matters further.
The man was transferred to University Hospital Kerry and a passenger in the vehicle is understood to have escaped injury.
