A new development of 10 social housing apartments in Killarney, recently completed and allocated to delighted tenants, points the way forward for the type of accommodation Kerry County Council should pursue going forward, it has been suggested.
The eye-catching Carraig Bheag development on Rock Road, adjacent to Killarney Nursing Home and close to the town grotto, comprises four two-bed apartments and six one-bed units within a short stroll of Killarney town centre and close to all amenities.
Cllr Marie Moloney has commended Kerry County Council on the standard of the development but, she stressed, the local authority should strive to provide many more of that style of accommodation.
She said the former Whitegates Hotel on the Muckross Road, which has been derelict for a number of years, would have been an ideal site on which to build apartments but a meeting of Killarney Municipal District Council heard that that property had recently been sold.
Cllr Niall Kelleher said Carraig Bheag is “an outstanding development” and it is very important given that the waiting list for one and two-bed accommodation is growing all the time.
Late last year it emerged that there were 666 applicants on a waiting list for one-bedroom accommodation in the Killarney Municipal District Council area in addition to 1,142 in Tralee, 461 in the Castleisland-Corca Dhuibhne district, 400 in Listowel and 352 in Kenmare.
Kerry County Council said it is committed to deliver 1,423 social housing units in Kerry between 2022 and 2026 and the target for Killarney during that period of time is 326.
This will encompass the council’s own builds, private developer turn-key properties to be sold to the local authority and the delivery of units by approved housing bodies.
Kerry County Council said it is actively accessing all existing suitable lands in the Killarney Munisial District area with a view to utilising it for social housing of a similar type and standard to that provided at Rock Road.
The contract for the Carraig Bheag development was awarded to Evans and Kelliher Construction Ltd.
