Celebration of life to take place at a later date

THE death has been announced of Kristen (Doodle) Kennelly who was the beloved daughter of Kerry poet and scholar Professor Brendan Kennelly.

The mum of three daughters, Meg, Hannah and Grace, Kristen passed away, suddenly, at her home in Blackrock, Co Dublin at the weekend. She was 51.

She was the only child of the award-winning poet and TCD Professor Emeritus, from Ballylongford, and the American poet and English professor Margaret (Peggy) O’Brien.

Kristen – affectionately known to her family and friends as Doodle – taught English at the University of Massachusetts – her mother’s home State – for a number of years before returning to Ireland where she also taught.

She previously penned an engaging column for the Sunday Independent for a period of time.

Kirsten is fondly remembered in her dad’s native north Kerry where she spent summer days in childhood and where she made lifelong friends.

She has many relatives in Kerry, including first cousin Kate Kennelly who is Kerry County Council’s Arts Officer.

A literary archive in Kirstin’s father’s name was launched last week in Trinity College to mark the gifted poet’s 85th birthday on Saturday.

The archive is a unique collection that will be of interest to scholars of Brendan Kennelly’s work and it contains literary drafts, lectures, research materials, reviews, personal material, photographs and memorabilia,

In accordance with government guidelines, Kristen’s funeral will take place privately and a celebration of her life will take place in due course with friends and family.
