Celtic stronger than ever for cup tie

Podge O’Connor: back from America and making his mark

THIS Saturday night is the big one for Killarney Celtic FC as they entertain Regional United FC from Limerick in the fifth round of the prestigious FAI Junior Cup.

Brian Spillane and Peter McCarthy will lead their side into battle under lights at Celtic Park (kick-off: 7.00pm) and a bumper home attendance is anticipated.

The competition – one of the main events for junior clubs – started with 600 teams with only 64 now remaining.

Regional United FC are very good side and they are currently in third place in the PJ Matthews Premier League, just behind Pike Rovers and Janesboro, having knocked the latter out of this competition in one of the early rounds.

Killarney Celtic have broadened their squad this year with the addition of four new players from Tralee Celtic after the club folded earlier this year.

Steven O’Mahoney, James Sugrue, Sean Moloney and Shane Brosnan have given the club many more options, both in defence and attack. Podge O’Connor has also returned to the squad this year having been in America for the last couple of years and he has added huge strength in midfield.

Wayne Sparling, Danny Roche and Stephen McCarthy continue to cause havoc up front with their speed and finishing prowess.

Celtic remain unbeaten so far this year in all competitions and they have secured a place in the semi-final of the MFA League Champions Trophy against Newmarket Celtic with the date to be confirmed.
