AN email sent to media organisations in Kerry, claiming that the newly formed Irexit Freedom to Prosper party intended to run a retired nurse in the May local elections in Killarney, was bogus.
KillarneyToday.com was one of the publications that received the communication – on Thursday, March 7 – and at least two other local media service providers in the county were also contacted.
The message claimed that a woman named Mairead Donovan would be a candidate in the Killarney Municipal District on a platform of opposing rural post office closures, providing more money for carers and fighting cuts in the Killarney ambulance services.
The email added: “She is also strongly opposed to wasteful EU policies which have led to the demise of the local fishing industry and the loss of Irish sovereignty”.
It stated that the decision was made following a Irexit Freedom conference held in Tralee on March 1.
The communication included an attachment of a photograph of a woman it claimed was Mairead Donovan but it now seems that the image may have sourced from a stock photo agency.
The email sent to KillarneyToday.com – from <[email protected]> – also included a link to what it claimed to be the “candidate’s page on the Irexit Freedom website” but that link no longer exists.
When contacted this afternoon by KillarneyToday.com Irexit Freedom to Prosper leader, Hermann Kelly, claimed an email had been sent to us on his behalf, on Tuesday night, denying that the party was running a candidate. It was pointed out to him, however, that no email of that description has been received.
He insisted that Irexit Freedom to Prosper had not nominated “any candidate in Kerry or elsewhere” and he was not aware that there had been a link to the so-called Mairead Donovan page on his party’s website.
Irexit Freedom to Prosper has as its primary objective the re-establishment of the national independence and sovereignty of Ireland and the restoration of national democracy to be achieved through leaving the European Union.
