Communities stunned and saddened by priest’s death

The funeral arrangements for Fr Donal O’Connor, the hugely popular Kerry priest who passed away, suddenly, on Wednesday, have been confirmed.

The chaplain at the Munster Technological University in Tralee and former parish priest in Beaufort died unexpectedly at his home in Shinnagh, Rathmore.

He had previously served as a curate in Castletownbere and Listowel and people all over the county and nationally have been stunned and saddened by his passing, at the age of 61, with hundreds of moving tributes shared on the KillarneyToday.com social media platform.

Fr Donal was a gifted preacher, a creative poet and writer, a great storyteller and wit and a fine amateur actor and he was hugely respected and appreciated in every community in which he served.

Predeceased by his parents David and Teresa and brother Tomás, Fr Donal is survived by his brothers Sean, Denis, David and Aidan, sisters-in-law, nieces and nephews, relations, neighbours, many friends and by Bishop Ray Browne and the priests of the Diocese of Kerry.

Reposing at O’Keeffe’s Funeral Home, Rathmore, on Sunday, from 4.00pm to 6.00pm, will be followed by removal to St Joseph’s Church, Rathmore.

Requiem Mass for Fr Donal will take place on Monday at 2.00pm with burial afterwards in the adjoining cemetery.
