The Minister of State for Housing, Local Government and Heritage, Malcolm Noonan, has been urged to progress the long overdue overhaul of the canal waterway at Ross Castle in Killarney.
Fianna Fáil general election contender, Michael Cahill, said Killarney Salmon and Trout Angling Club have been in contact with the National Parks and Wildlife Service requesting that canal waterway be made safe and passable for all anglers and boat owners there.
“This canal creates the island of Ross, entering the Lower Lake on the eastern shore at Bunrower and on the western side, it flows under the centuries old Guard’s Bridge, into the Bog Bay at Ross Castle,” Cllr Cahill said.
“The canal, according to the anglers, is in a sorry state, with maintenance not being conducted on it in decades,” he added.
Cllr Cahill said the area itself offers a safe haven for boats but not safe transit.
“There will, of course, be environmental sensitivities that have to be taken into account with such a project but I have urged the minister and senior officials in the NPWS, National Parks and Wildlife Service to progress it urgently for Killarney,” Cllr Cahill said.
