Consultant welcome but faster action needed

University Hospital Kerry

AFTER a long wait, a consultant cardiologist has been appointed to the staff at University Hospital Kerry.

Dr Grace O’Carroll takes up the post this week following a long campaign by public representatives for action to tackle the growing waiting list backlog.

The appointment was confirmed to Kerry TD John Brassil in a letter from hospital manager Ferghal Grimes as a reply to a parliamentary question submitted seeking clarification on when the post would be filled.

In June of 2018, the HSE told Deputy Brassil that the recruitment process had commenced to replace the consultant and it has taken a further 15 months to appoint someone to the job.

“Whilst I welcome the appointment, the timeframe for the recruitment process is not acceptable,” he said.

“If UHK is to continue as a category-three 24/7 hospital, the appointment to vacant positions needs to be priority and the Department of Health and the HSE need to review the recruitment process to ensure that there is no delay in the filling of essential posts,” the Fianna Fail politician remarked.
