Crackdown on blue badge space abuse

Supt Flor Murphy and members of An Garda Siochana with Mary O’Shea of the Killarney Access Group and some of the team from Cheshire Homes setting off on Operation Enable

GARDAI in Killarney have initiated a new crackdown on vehicles parked illegally in areas reserved for drivers with disability badges or those with mobility difficulties.

They teamed up with representatives of the Killarney Access Group and the team at Cheshire Homes for the campaign which was part of the Make Way Day initiative spearheaded by the Disability Federation of Ireland.

Operation Enable saw spot checks being conducted on the streets and in areas around the town to target illegal use of disabled parking spaces and parking permits.

Gardai have warned drivers to never park on footpaths or use designated disabled parking bays without a proper permit and they will be carrying out regular checks.

One driver was fined for parking on a footpath on Monsignor O’Flaherty Road as that would impede people using wheelchairs from passing by.
