Crokes earn the win and the bragging rights

NOT even an impressive display of point shooting from the bang-in-form James O’Donoghue could salvage a result for Killarney Legion against fierce rivals Dr Crokes in an engaging Kerry Club Championship local derby clash at a busy Fitzgerald Stadium this afternoon.

In their last competitive outing Crokes registered an emphatic 1-20 to 0-9 victory in the championship but astute new Legion manager Stephen Stack has instilled a new confidence and sense of purpose and they really brought to the game to the Kerry and Munster champions.

With O’Donoghue in great form and Conor Keane and big Padraig Lucey also finding the range, Legion looked sharper early but a fabulously worked goal involving Johnny Buckley and flying wing back Michael Potts resulted in the latter finding the net after 16 minutes.

Crokes led 1-6 to 0-7 at half-time and there was precious little between the sides as the game wore on but the opportunism of Tony Brosnan and sub Jordan Kiely caused trouble for the Legion rearguard.

Although Crokes held a narrow advantage as the final whistle approached, a Rob Leen point levelled it but nobody needs any reminding that Crokes are never and they pounced late to register a single point victory, 1-14 to 0-16.

In the opening game at Fitzgerald Stadiuma brave Rathmore challenge saw them fall just short to a very experienced Kerins O’Rahillys with the Tralee side emerging victorious on  1-17 to 3-9 scoreline while on Saturday evening Kenmae Shamrocks pipped Kilcummin by a point, 1-13 to 0-15 and Austin Stacks overcame Dingle by three.

At intermediate level, Templenoe just about proved too strong for a plucky Spa side with the final scoreline reading 3-12 to 1-16, Currow lost to Waterville, Glenflesk had a 2-15 to 2-7 win against Castleisland Desmonds and Beaufort lost 1-5 to 0-17 to John Mitchels.

In the junior grade, a disappointing Fossa fell to St Pat’s of Blennerville in Farranfore.
