IN a development that will not have escaped the attention of Eamonn Fitzmaurice and the Kerry selectors, Dr Crokes’ sharpshooter Daithi Casey has today been named Munster Player of the Year.
He was honoured at the AIB Provincial Club Player Awards reception in Croke Park along with other footballers, hurlers and camogie stars who caught the eye during 2016.
Voted for by national and regional sports media, the winning players were selected based on their overall performance throughout the provincial club season.
Casey, an All-Ireland Under-21 winner, has excelled in recent months and his penalty against Kilmurry-Ibrickane of Clare in the Munster quarter-final was key to the Killarney success.
To follow that up in the Munster final with a hat-trick to sink The Nire showed his class and it broke the Waterford side early and sent Crokes through to the Club Championship semi-final against Corofin.
The versatile Casey can play at midfield or in any offensive role but it is generally agreed that his best position is leading the attack from the centre half foward position. He is also a top class free taker and is lethal from the penalty spot and his accuracy has kept Crokes in several big contests this season.
Corofon’s Ian Burke, was named Connacht Club Footballer of the Year at today’s ceremony which was hosted by RTÉ sports presenter and fleet-footed dancer Des Cahill.
Dublin star Diarmuid Connolly was named Leinster Player of the Year for his stunning performances with is club St Vincents.
