Killarney’s Deerpark Pitch and Putt Club almost pulled off a clean sweep of the men’s grades honours at the County Matchplay event in Tralee at the weekend as Damien Fleming (senior), Adam Kelly (intermediate) and Daniel Kelly (junior) made the finals of their respective grades.
Damien won his third consecutive senior title with a one-up victory over Jason Cregan of Tralee in the decider while Daniel won the junior final with a 3 and 2 win over Newmarket’s Ben Murphy. Adam, unfortunately, was beaten in the intermediate decider.
Less than 24 hours after county board chairman, John McGrath, presented Daniel Kelly with the county junior men’s matchplay cup, the pair faced each other in the club matchplay championship final on Monday.
Daniel won at the last hole to complete a club and county matchplay double after he had beaten Noel Moynihan in the semi-finals while John had beaten Seán O’Brien in the other semi-final.
In the plate, Bobby Kelly made it a father and son double after he beat Hugh O’Sullivan in the decider.
On Sunday at the under 16 event Brian O’Leary beat Ryan Moloney in the championship final while Noah Sexton won the plate against Ben Kelliher.
Special mention to Cathal Sugrue for registering a hole-in-one on the 17th, his first in game. Both Nathan Cronin and Brian McCarthy were the beaten semi- finalists in the championship event.
