Donie, Margaret and a rogue Dub enjoy the parade

Club legend Donie Sheahan salutes the players as they pass his pharmacy

SPARE a thought for the lone true blue Dublin fan, clad in his county colours, who was making his way through Killarney town centre on Saturday when he chanced upon the All-Ireland winning Dr Crokes squad and hundreds of their celebrating supporters parading jubilantly along the streets.

The light-hearted ribbing he was subjected to can probably be imagined but he took it all in good spirits and assured them they would have no double Kerry win to celebrate later that evening when the Dubs took on the Kingdom in Austin Stack Park.

All the excitement and colour of the big homecoming parade was captured on video by Gail Tangney (link below) and her camera also happened to zoom in on a few Legion supporters watching proceedings from what they might have thought was a safe distance.

Two of the greatest shots on the video show the team and supporters greeting two Dr Crokes legends, club stalwart Donie Sheahan and Margaret O’Leary – the daughter of the famous Small Ger O’Leary – as they watched the parade and waved to the players from outside their respective business premises on Main Street.

“The video captures a day in the life of Killarney when a huge number of Dr Crokes supporters stopped the town, parading behind the team from Lewis Road up to the top of High Street,” said videographer Gail.

“Droves of locals and tourists lined the streets taking in the wonderful atmosphere. I hope that this video will be of value to people in 10 or 20 years’ time as they look back on a very happy day in Killarney’s history,” she added.
