Engineer tells of frustrations over footpath crux

Páirc Chuimin in Kilcummin: no proper footpath to village

REPEATED attempts to strike a deal with a property owner to acquire land to develop a footpath at a housing estate in a busy village have not have the desired outcome, a meeting of the Killarney Municipal District Council has been told.

Council officials have been trying to strike a deal to secure the land necessary to develop a path from the Páirc Chuimin estate in Kilcummin to the nearby village but, to date, negotiations have been unsuccessful.

Cllr Michael Gleeson, who has repeatedly raised the issue, said children walking to and from school were being placed in great danger because of the lack of a footpath and he asked again for attempts to be made to resolve the matter.

Killarney Municipal District Engineer, John Ahern, said that it unfortunate that progress has not been made but it is hoped to meet residents again as soon as possible.

“I am as frustrated as anyone. We are trying to make progress and we will make a renewed effort,” Mr Ahern said.

The local authority had already reviewed and updated the previous design to bring to the landowner but the bottom line is that agreement is required, the meeting heard.

Cllr Gleeson said it was an unfortunate situation as the estate is only going to get larger and a footpath is required for safety reasons.

“The residents of Páirc Chuimin need peace of mind,” he said.

Meanwhile, Cllr Maura Healy-Rae has asked Kerry County Council and Irish Water to take over the Droumadesert group water scheme in Kilcummin.

The council said the 50-year-old scheme, which is served by a private well source and includes 1.2km of water main, supplied drinking water to eight households.

“A public water main, supplied by the Central Regional Water Supply Scheme, is laid immediately adjacent to the group scheme. An application form for takeover has been sent to the group scheme,” an official confirmed.
