Ireland’s first solo transatlantic oarswoman has been honoured in Kerry.
Epic adventurer Dr Karen Weekes was presented with a hand-crafted boat by Munster Technological University Kerry campus president Professor Maggie Cusack and chairperson Jimmy Deenihan.
Dr Weekes, a lecturer at MTU, completed her record-breaking bid to be the first Irish woman to row solo across the Atlantic Ocean to guarantee her place in sporting history.
After beginning her demanding, marathon journey in the Canary Islands on December 6 last, she finally in Barbados on February 24 after an incredibly difficult 80 days at sea.
Her 2,614 nautical mile or 4,841km voyage was a huge physical and mental challenge for the psychologist from Kinvara, Co Galway and not only has she become the first Irish woman to succeed at the task, but she is one of just 20 women in the world to do so.
