The government has been urged to act immediately on the healthcare bonus due to Kerry frontline workers.
Kerry TD Pa Daly said the entire duration of the pandemic, healthcare workers made huge sacrifices to protect lives and ensure the health service staved off collapse.
“Whether directly employed or contract staff, cleaners, carers or consultants, everyone made a vital contribution,” he said.
Deputy Daly said it has been 18 months since the recognition payment was announced and it is nine months since the government and the cabinet signed off on a proposal.
“Despite this, so many frontline health care workers and people working in hospitals are still awaiting payment. This is unacceptable and all those eligible must be given a timetable as to when they can expect payment,” he stated.
The Sinn Fein TD said as things stand now, one could forgive people for being cynical given the delays in getting the payment to so many.
“Since it was announced, my office has had to field several queries a week from people wondering about when it will materialise.
“With the cost of living rising, every pay cheque brings anxiety for workers looking to make ends meet. The payment would give a needed boost to so many,” Deputy Daly said.
He insisted healthcare workers must be treated with dignity, fairness and respect and the government needs to live up to its own promises and take action now.
