FESTIVAL organisers from Kerry across the country today attended the first of a two-day Fáilte Ireland masterclass to build world-class festivals and develop skills in growing international visitors.

Kerry festivals represented at the event in the Spencer Hotel, Dublin, included the smash hit Ireland Bikefest in Killarney, Dingle Marathon, Listowel Writers’ Week and the Rose of Tralee.

Ireland Bikefest is a huge hit in Killarney

Festivals motivate over 200,000 overseas visitors to come to Ireland and contribute €108 million to the economy every year. New research into Fáilte Ireland funded festivals shows that 58 per cent of festival attendees from the UK, US, Germany and France, are repeat visitors and almost 60 per cent of overseas visitors attend festivals outside of Dublin.

This new research has also identified five key factors that deliver a successful festival for tourism including:

  • A focus on or celebrate a specific interest or tradition
  • A clearly identifiable overseas festival fan base
  • Links to international networks
  • Immersive and participatory experiences
  • Local atmosphere and an opportunity to meet like-minded people
