The fire service in Kerry was mobilised 1,067 times in the period from January to September of this year which was a 12 per cent decrease on the number of call-ours for the corresponding period the previous year.

During the nine-month period they attended 48 chimney fires, 44 gorse fires and 140 fires of other descriptions.

In addition they were called to attend 11 cases of entrapment, eight reports of concerns over gas or chemicals and two of hazardous substances non-transit.

There were 161 road traffic accidents, 95 other rescues and six cases of removal or rescue of persons from water.

Road traffic collisions cases were almost identical to last year with just one additional call-out between January and September.

The number of gorse fires was down from 169 for the same period last year which represents a 74% decrease.
