Firefighters battled the blaze for several hours

Smoke still billowing from the building with firefighters at the scene in Kenmare this Monday morning

A MYSTERY fire in the early hours of this morning has caused extensive damage to Kenmare Golf Club.

The clubhouse was very badly damaged in the blaze and the roof of the building was destroyed.

The alarm was raised just before 4.30am and six units of the Kerry Fire Service – as well as four water carrier tenders – rushed to the scene.

Several firefighters from Killarney were involved and it was a number of hours before the first was brought under control.

The fire service was still on site at the golf club at 10 o’clock this morning.

The roof of the building was completely destroyed and the inside of the clubhouse was also extensively damaged.

It is not yet known what caused the blaze but a full investigation will be carried out.

In a statement issued on social media, Kenmare Golf Club officials said: “Thankfully nobody was hurt. We’ll be in touch over the coming weeks with plans to overcome this terrible setback.”
