A fleet of nine dedicated lorry-mounted salt spreaders, 13 mini gritters and 20 hand-pushed footpath salters, in addition to snow ploughs, are in use in Kerry as the county battles with the big chill.

Priority routes were salted at 4 o’clock this afternoon and the gritting teams will be out again at 4.00am.

Kerry County Council’s severe weather assessment team has met again this Tuesday afternoon to assess the current situation following Met Éireann’s issuing of a Status Orange temperature and ice warning.

Temperatures of between minus five and minus 10 are predicted between 8 o’clock tonight and 10.00am tomorrow.

A further Status Orange warning will commence on Wednesday at 6.00pm until 11.00am on Thursday. With a Status Yellow low temperature ad ice warning to come into effect at 6.00am on Friday.

The severe weather assessment team has advised that driving conditions remain hazardous throughout the county and the public have been asked to travel only if necessary. If people have to take to the roads they should exercise extreme caution, slow down and allow extra time for journeys.

Kerry County Council’s housing department is also working to ensure that there is adequate provision of emergency accommodation available throughout the county.
