Formal review of Ticketmaster concert pricing sought

Cllr Niall O’Callaghan: Enough is enough
Taoiseach Simon Harris: Asked to step in

With the Competition and Consumer Protection Commission pledging a review of concerns raised about the experience members of the public had when buying concert tickets at the weekend, a Killarney councillor has called on Taoiseach Simon Harris to intervene in the matter.

A number of politicians have urged the consumer agency to investigate Ticketmaster and its contentious pricing system that saw the cost of Oasis tickets rise by hundreds of euro shortly after going on sale on Saturday morning.

Commenting on the X social media site, Killarney councillor and experienced DJ Niall O’Callaghan said it was time for Simon Harris to step in.

He described the concert ticket prices being charged on Ticketmaster as “ridiculous”.

Cllr O’Callaghan has called for “a full formal review” of the situation and he demanded more transparency in the process.

Croke Park: Will host the big concerts

“Enough is enough,” he insisted.

Commenting on the furore that has arisen since Saturday’s ticket chaos, the Government said there are robust legislative protections in place to protect consumers and they are entitled to sufficient information before they purchase tickets.

Several Oasis fans queuing for tickets for the two gigs at Croke Park next August found that prices for standing tickets had skyrocketed if they wee fortunate enough to finally got the opportunity to make a purchase, with some quoted at more than €400 per ticket.

Tickets were advertised from €86.50, subject to a service charge, bus some reported the price for standing tickets eventually went higher than four times that amount.

For most Oasis fan, however, the unprecedented ticket rush ended in disappointment and in the words of one of the band’s smash hit songs, it’s a case of Going Nowhere.
