PIZZA and toffees topped the menu at the Killarney Credit Union sponsored Killarney Athletic AFC seven-a-side soccer tournament last night as Four Star Pizza pipped Tatler Toffees in a dramatic penalty shootout to clinch the Reserve Cup title.
The sides were locked 1-1 at the end of normal time after a very tight and engaging affair in Woodlawn. Gavin O’Shea had edged Toffees ahead in the first half but Dan O’Donoghue levelled after the restart and there was little to separate the sides from that point on.
The sides were locked 3-3 in a tense penalty shootout – football’s version of Russian Roulette – and a tenacious Four Star side went on to clinch the silverware in sudden death.
In the Under 14 final, also played last night, JR Spares had a 2-1 win against They Call Us Legends.
The Legends led 1-0 at half-time, courtesy of a Eoghan Crowley strike, but JR Spares got right back into it on the resumption with goals from Dylan Roche and Michael Dennehy sealing the matter.
The Player of the Tournament award went to Dylan Roche of JR Spares who was also the Captain.
The 20 minutes-a-side Premier Cup final between Liebherr and The Failte Legends will take at 8.00pm tonight and that will be preceded by the Over 35 Cup final clash between Tim Jones & Sons Butchers and Leane’s Tool Hire which will be 12 minutes a side.
It will be a clash of the Barbers in the Under 16 final between Boru Barbers and Steve’s Barbers at 7.00pm.
