A priest who grew up in Killarney has been formally recommended to become the next Chaplain of the Fire Department of New York.
New York State Attorney General, Letitia James, has proposed Fr Brendan Fitzgerald for the high-profile role, describing him as a pillar of the New York City community.
Born in the Rockaways in Queens and currently pastor in the busy parish of St Barnabas – the largest Irish parish in the US – Fr Brendan was raised with his siblings in Killarney.
His mother, Esther (née Ahern) is originally from Park Road and his father, Denis, is a native of Knocknagoshel and while they operated a thriving bar and restaurant business in New York, they brought up their five sons in Killarney.
Fr Brendan and his four brothers, John, Kevin, his twin Denis and Pio, went to school in Killarney and he was ordained in St John’s Cathedral in Limerick in 2006 before he moved back to America.
In her letter of recommendation, Attorney General James said Fr Brendan has a history of chaplaincy, including to the Hyde Park and Staatsburg Fire Departments, where he was an effective educator, counsellor, administrator and public servant.
“In New York City, he has built a solid track record of building trust and community within the FDNY. As Chaplain to the FDNY Emerald Society, FDNY Holy Name Society and FDNY GAA, he has created strong and meaningful connections among members,” she said.
“Moreover, his extensive experience in grief and addiction counselling demonstrates his ability to support individuals in crisis. His calm demeanor and compassionate nature have positively impacted the lives of many,” said Ms James who became the first African American and first woman to be elected New York Attorney General.
She said Fr Brendan possesses the experience, compassion and dedication necessary to excel as an FDNY Chaplain.
“I am confident he would serve with distinction and make a meaningful contribution to the community,” her recommendation concluded.
The role of the FDNY Chaplain is to administer rites and religious educational programmes, make pastoral calls and counsel individuals and families regarding personal, moral and spiritual matters and to maintain liaison and cooperative relationships with social service agencies and other community organisations.
In 2019, Fr Brendan – who regularly returns to Killarney – was chosen as Kerryman of the Year by the Kerry Association in the Big Apple.
