The death has occurred of Fr Pat Murphy, of the Diocese of Kerry, who worked on the missions for many years before returning to serve as Parish Priest in Sneem and St Patrick’s Church in Tahilla as well as in Kenmare, Castletownbere and Bere Island.

A native of Castletownbere, Fr Pat passed away, peacefully, on Tuesday, in the care of the staff of Our Lady of Fatima Home in Tralee. He was 85.

Fr Pat ministered in Trujillo, a coastal city in the north west of Peru, for several years before returning to Kerry to continue his service.

During his time in Sneem, he spearheaded a major €1.2 million renovation of St Michael’s Church, built in 1810 in the heart of the village, and the end result was the creation of one of the most striking, modern and admired Church buildings in the diocese.

Fr Pat is survived by his brother John, sister-in -aw Alma, nieces, nephews, relatives and friends and by Bishop Ray Browne and the priests of the diocese.

He was predeceased by his siblings, Donal, Margaret, Betty (Kelligher), Joan (Lovage), Sheila, Kitty (McCarthy) and Michael.

Reposing in Harrington’s Funeral Home, Castletownbere on this Thursday, from 5.00pm to 7.00pm will be followed by removal to the Church of the Sacred Heart, Castletownbere.

Requiem Mass will take place at 12 noon Friday by burial in St Mary’s Cemetery in Droum. The funeral Mass will be live-streamed on https://www.mcnmedia.tv/camera/church-of-the-sacred-heart-1.
