A group of 11 friends, including some from Killarney, are preparing to run in the Cork City Half Marathon on the June bank holiday weekend in memory of one of their pals who passed away after a long and hard battle with cancer.
Aoife Doody, a primary school teacher from Killarney and Max Huggard, whose family runs the Lake Hotel, want to raise funds for the Beaumont Hospital Foundation where their friend, Ned Ryan, received such excellent care until his death last November, at the age of 23.
They all got to know each other when they began their teacher training together at Mary Immaculate College in Limerick in 2019 and they described Ned as an incredible person who was funny, kind and full of life.
“Killarney was always a regular and much-loved meeting spot for everyone involved, including Ned and his dear girlfriend, Anne, before he sadly passed away,” Aoife said.
“The response to the fundraiser so far has blown us away but we hope to maintain the influx of donations to enable us to raise as much funds as we can for this amazing cause,” she added.
The friends said every donation, no matter how small, will make a difference and the funds will go directly to Beaumont Hospital to help fund critical services and supports for patients like young teacher Ned.
The friends have already raised over €19,700 of an initial €20,000 target but they are hoping that the public will continue to give as generously as possible to help make a difference to those in need.
