A WOMAN has died and three others sustained serious injuries in a collision on the main N22 Killarney to Farranfore road this afternoon.
The head-on crash involving two cars occurred at Dunrine, near Lawlor’s Cross, outside Killarney, at 4.15pm.
A woman, understood to be in her 80s, who was a rear-seat passenger in one of the vehicles, suffered fatal injuries and three others were also hurt.
There were three people travelling in one vehicle and a driver only in the other.
A number of ambulances, gardai and fire service personnel attended the scene and the victims were transferred to University Hospital Kerry.
The main Killarney to Farranfore road will remain closed overnight to facilitate a forensic examination of the scene by garda crash investigations personnel.
Local diversions are in place and gardai have tonight appealed through KillarneyToday, com to anybody travelling on the road to take alternative routes, via Kilcummin, Ballyhar and Firies, and to ensure they avoid the area.
They have also appealed for anybody that may have witnessed the collision or anybody travelling on the road around that time that might have information that could be useful to the investigation to contact Killarney Garda Station on 064-6631222.
