Gardai appeal for witnesses to come forward

The assault victim passed away today in Cork University Hospital

THE man who was seriously assaulted on a town centre street after a night out at the weekend has died in hospital.

The incident occurred at The Square in Killorglin at approximately 2.20am on Sunday.

The man has been named locally as Stephen O’Connor from Glencar. It is understood he was single and in his 30s.

He suffered serious head injuries in the attack which happened outside a fast food premises in the early hours of Sunday morning.

He was removed by ambulance to Kerry General Hospital and was later transferred to University Hospital Cork where he passed away this afternoon.

Killarney gardai, who have asked for any witnesses to the incident to contact them, believe there was a large number of people in the area when the assault occurred.

They have already spoken to a number of witnesses but no arrests have been made. The results of a post-mortem examination will direct the course of the garda investigation.

Gardai are particularly anxious to hear from any motorist with dash-cam footage of the incident or any taxi drivers who might have been in the area at the time.
