Gardai in clampdown on underage drinking

GARDAI in Killarney have warned pubs, off licences and other premises selling alcohol that they are enforcing a zero tolerance attitude to the problem of underage drinking and any premises caught selling booze to minors will be met with the full force of the law.

Eight licence holders have received the benefit of the Probation Act at a sitting of Killarney District Court after pleading guilty to selling alcohol to an underage person.

The cases followed a Garda test purchase operation, conducted during the school mid-term break last February, which resulted in a total of 19 premises, including pubs, off licences, supermarkets, hotels and garages being visited and a number of detections were made.

A Garda spokesman told KillarneyToday.com that similar operations will be conducted again and any breaches will be brought before the courts.

A test case operation also took place in Caherciveen earlier this year and prosecutions are likely to follow.
