Gardai to conduct review of Mike Gaine investigation

Kenmare farmer Michael Gaine whose Requiem Mass will take place this Saturday

Top brass Gardai have pledged to conduct “a peer review” of how the Michael Gaine case in Kenmare was conducted.

Garda Commissioner Drew Harris said there are lessons to be learned from investigations that were initially treated as missing persons cases but were later upgraded to homicide.

The Michael Gaine and Tina Satchwell investigations are two such cases.

Gardai initially launched a missing persons investigation when Michael Gaine was reported missing from his home in Kenmare on March 21 last but the case was upgraded to one of homicide on April 29.

DNA tests of human tissue found an the Gaine farm in Carrig East almost a month later were confirmed to be those of the popular 56-year-old.

Initial searches of both the Gaine farm and the Satchwell home in Youghal, Co Cork did not find any human remains and it was only after follow-up searches that a major breakthrough materialised in both cases.

Commissioner Harris said a report on Mrs Satchwell’s disappearance would be compiled for Justice Minister, Jim O’Callaghan, while the case of Mr Gaine is undergoing a peer review.

“I do think there’s learning for us around those who would commit crime and then attempt to dispose of the body and often are successful in disposing of the body,” he said.
