Although there was a gap of over 50 years between the time they climbed the steps of the Hogan Stand in triumph on All-Ireland final day, two Kerry GAA sharpshooters have bridged the generations and they are now lining out alongside each other on the same team.
Michael Gleeson, who won two All-Ireland senior medals in 1969 and 1970, and David Clifford, who won a Celtic cross in 2022, form a formidable partnership for Team Killarney and they are hoping to lead the town to what would be sensational all-Ireland victory in 2024.
They are both supporting the Killarney Tidy Towns campaign and optimism is high that the reigning tidiest large town in the county can be crowned the overall winner in the competition when the results are revealed on November 1.
Spa legend Michael – chairman of the Tidy Towns committee – and Fossa superstar David lined out for Team Killarney for a special promotional video to highlight the great work being undertaken by the local committee and volunteers.
The production, organised by competition sponsors SuperValu, interviewed both GAA stars about what Killarney means to them and the beauty of the town they are both very proud to call home.
To add a heavy sprinkling of humour to the video, they were joined by the hilarious Bernard Casey, the popular Portmagee comedian who is a regular visitor to Killarney and he too says the town is looking fantastic.
Like Gleeson and Clifford, Casey is also a footballer of some renown having lined out with Skellig Rangers in his prime and, famously, he once won a man-of-the-match award.
Also featuring in the SuperValu production – which will be released on social media shortly – are dedicated Killarney Tidy Towns campaigner Johnny McGuire and volunteer Dorothy Gauze.
