TWO musically gifted families, including the well-known O’Connor clan from Killarney, have joined forces for a very unique collaboration due for release on October 1.
Brilliant accordionist Liam O’Connor, his daughter Saoirse and sons Oisín and Cillian, have lined up with Clannad singer Moya Brennan, her husband, Tim Jarvis, daughter Aisling and son Paul, to record an anthemic song, Strong in Numbers, which was written by Moya and her husband.
In support of the Clannad star’s unmistakable vocals, both families add an amazing array of instruments and strong vocals to the track which was produced at Moya’s recording studio with an arrangement by Liam O’Connor and Moya.
“We had all played together recently in The Friary in Killarney and it was such a positive experience for all of us that we just had to repeat it,” Liam explained.
“Not only have we done this recording of Strong in Numbers but we’re planning to perform in the Friary again this year. After that, I wouldn’t rule anything out,” he added.
Moya Brennan, the recipient of a Lifetime Achievement Award in the RTÉ Radio 1 Folk Awards, is equally excited about the project.
“It was only after the first collaboration between the O’Connor and the Brennan families that I wondered why this doesn’t happen more often.
“It’s quite an appropriate collaboration, given that it was often families the length and breadth of the country who kept the spirit of Irish music alive through difficult times. If this opens the door for more of these collaborations, we’d be thrilled,” she said.
Strong in Numbers by Moya Brennan and Liam O’Connor and their two families will be available soon from Beo Records on the usual online platforms.
