KERRY captain David Clifford’s dream of winning a Junior Premier Championship title with his beloved Fossa club ended – for this season at least – with a seven-point semi-final defeat to an up-for-it Gneeveguilla side at Fitzgerald Stadium this Saturday afternoon.
Even though the star Kerry attacker scored a super goal and tagged on a number of points, Gneeveguilla proved too hot to handle and a four-goal salvo sent them on their way to the decider against either Ballydonoghue or Brosna who meet tomorrow.
Goals win games and Gneeveguilla pounced for their haul of three-pointers at crucial stages.
A sixth minute strike from the outstanding Padraig Doyle and a converted penalty by Shane O’Sullivan gave them a 2-3 to 0-7 interval lead and although an excellent Paudie Clifford goal in the 35th minute gave Fossa the edge, points from Pa Warren and John O’Leary had the sides back on terms.
When David Clifford illuminated the game with a jinking solo run and an excellent finish, to give Fossa a two-point lead, it looked as if it might be their day but Gneeveguilla had plenty in store and two late goals from Padraig Doyle and Pa Warren gave Seanie O’Leary’s side a 4-10 to 2-9 victory.
