Former county championship winning team-mates were pitched directly against each other when the draw for this season’s Kerry Senior Football Championship was made on Monday night.

Former champions East Kerry have been pitched Spa who were a key part of the divisional side in its successful double in the blue riband event of the domestic game in the county in 2019 and 2020. They parted company when last season when Spa opted to turn senior following victory in the Intermediate championship.

They have been drawn together in what will be a very testing group two along with last year’s beaten finalists Kerins O’Rahilly’s and county league division one champions Dingle.

The top two teams in each group will go through to the quarter-finals.

In group one Dr Crokes – another of the seeded teams by means of their qualification for the last four last season – will have been drawn with Shannon Rangers, Kenmare Shamrocks and St Kieran.

Group three sees reigning champions Austin Stacks drawn with West Kerry, Mid Kerry and Na Gaeil while group four has St Brendan’s Board, South Kerry, Templenoe and Feale Rangers.

What it’s all about: The Bishop Moynihan Cup

In the first round the seeded teams in the groups, Dr Crokes, Kerins O’Rahilly’s, Austin Stacks and St Brendan’s Board will play the fourth named teams at neutral venues with the team three playing team two in each group. The results of those games will determine the make-up of the next round.

There was no shortage of appropriate silverware at Monday night’s draw with the names and groups plucked from the Sam Maguire cup, the national league cup and the Bishop Moynihan cup.

Kerry County Board chairman Patrick O’Sullivan and main sponsor Tomás Garvey officiated at the draw with county board secretary Peter Twiss as master of ceremonies.
