A group of young musicians, comprising past and present pupils of Cullina National School, defied all the odds when they beat much older and more experienced competitors to take gold the national Community Games finals in Carlow.

Darragh Doyle, Benen O’Rourke, Anna-Mai Hughes, Katelyn Murphy and Leah O’Malley triumphed in the under 16 category, despite the fact that two of them are only 10 years of age, two more are 12 and one is aged 13.

They entered the under 16 category because one of the group was outside the limit for the under 12 age group and they overcame the challenge presented by eight other teams.

The talented young musicians had been practicing since last March and they stole the show at the final with a medley featuring Isle of Hope, Count on Me, The Cup Song and Peigín Litir Mór.

On the return to Killarney, with their gold medals in their pockets, the newly crowned All-Ireland were treated to a great night out in Kate Kearney’s Cottage and they entertained all in attendance with a rousing session.

The Cullina performers are now preparing to send record an audition for this year’ s Late Late Toy Show.
