Handmaid’s Tale women, spooks and ghouls out in force

SPOOKS and ghouls, vampires and monsters stepped out of the shadows and dragged their way through the streets of Killarney as they descended, slowly but purposefully, on a white-knuckle night of scares before bedtime for Halloween.

There was splatters of blood and slime, frightening freaks and loud shrieks but perhaps the most terrifying of all was a haunting group from the dystopian drama The Handmaid’s Tale, in their red cloaks and white bonnets, who said very little but had everybody watching over their shoulders as they passed by en masse. It came an no surprise that they were adjudged the winners of the best themed costumes.

It was another trip back in time that won the overall award for biddies Alanna Lyne and Naomi Farrell who donned their nightdresses, fur-lined slippers and head scarves and arrived with the aid of their walking sticks.

The occasion was the annual Halloween fancy dress in The Grand and there was certainly no effort spared as some wonderfully weird and wacky costumes and ideas went on parade.

It was all well and good while the lights were on and the company was good but making their way home afterwards, in the still of night, put a bit of extra pep in everybody’s step.
