The official launch of the 2024 Journal of the Kerry Archaeological and Historical Society will take place at Tralee Library on Thursday next at 6.30pm.
The popular scholarly journal, which has been published annually since 1968, makes an important contribution to the story of Kerry and its heritage and history. It will be launched by the Deputy Mayor of Kerry, Cllr Fionnán Fitzgerald.
The launch will be followed by the latest in a series of lectures at 7.00pm. Tony Bergin, who is the President of the Kerry Archaeological and Historical Society, will present a talk on the history of Kerry Group plc marking the 50th anniversary of the formation of Kerry Co-operative Creameries.
The lecture, which is open to members of the public, will cover a short history of Kerry Group from its formation in the early 1970s up to the present day.
“By coincidence, this lecture coincides with the announcement this week that Kerry Co-op will begin the acquisition of the dairy and foods businesses of Kerry Group plc in early 2025, another major milestone for both entities,” said Tony Bergin.
“I hope that anyone who is interested will come along and learn more about this iconic brand and one of the greatest success stories in the history of Kerry business and enterprise,” he said.
The Journal of the Kerry Archaeological and Historical Society this year includes a diverse collection of chapters covering topics including the American and Colonial Navigation Company, the Famine Burial Grounds of Tralee Workhouse, Teeraght Lighthouse, the Knockavrogeen West Megalithic Tomb and Killarney Irish language enthusiast, Brian Ó Ceallaigh.
The Journal will be available for purchase from www.kerryhistory.ie and will also be available in bookshops throughout the county including Tralee, Killarney, Listowel, Dingle and Caherciveen.
