THE funeral will take place this Thursday of Fr Donal J O’Leary who was a hugely respected and award-winning author and teacher who shared his views on theology and spirituality at a number of international conferences and retreats as well as through his writings.
From Church Place in Rathmore, he studied at All Hallows College in Dublin and he was ordained, at the age of 23, in June 1960.
He worked as a curate and parish priest in Leeds for over 30 years before, including 25 years in Strawberry Hill preparing Catholic teachers for their ministry. For another two decades, he taught theology and religious education in St Mary’s University College, London, becoming chair of its Religious Studies Department before being appointed Episcopal Vicar for Christian Formation in Leeds.
Fr O’Leary, who was 82, held a Masters degree in theology, spirituality and religious education and he penned a total of 20 books, a number of which won significant awards.
Predeceased by his brother Joseph, Fr O’Leary is survived by his brother Fr Micheál, sister Maura, extended family and a wide circle of friends.
Requiem Mass will take in St Joseph’s Church, Rathmore this Thursday at 1.00pm with burial afterwards in the adjoining cemetery.
