Report: Jason O’Connor
KILLARNEY’S Deerpark Pitch and Putt club not only played host to the Munster Under 16 Matchplay event at the weekend but the club’s talented members also reached the knockout stages of the keenly contested competition.
In fact no less than 11 out of the 16 players to reach the latter stages came from the host club.
In the Championship category both Alex O’Callaghan and Robbie Harnett reached the semi-finals before losing to eventual winner Shea Fennell (Parteen) and runner-up Glenn Towler (St Annes) respectively.
The Plate saw Cillian Courtney victorious over clubmate Cathal Kelly in the semi-finals while he defeated Parteen’s Patrick Mitchell in the final 2 and 1. Mitchell had defeated Joey McCarthy in the earlier semi-final.
The club’s Grounds Committee did some fantastic work to ensure the course was up to standard for the event, particularly given the dry, hot and humid conditions of recent times.
In the Parteen Scratch Cup, meanwhile, Jason O’Brien was the runner-up in last Sunday’s senior event, continuing a recent good run of form.
Five players from the Deerpark club will travel to Glenville in Dublin this weekend as Damien Fleming, John McGrath and Jason O’Brien all compete in the senior grade while in the Intermediate grade on Saturday Gearóid Cronin and James Fleming will both be in action.
