CONTRACTS to commence the construction of seven different new housing schemes in Kerry – which will add 88 houses to the social housing stock – have been inked at Kerry County Council headquarters.

The seven contracts, which are worth a combined €17 million, will see the construction of new social housing in Rathmore, Glenbeigh, Kenmare, Ardfert, Lixnaw and Ballybunion.

Mayor of Kerry, Cllr Niall Kelleher, welcomed the contract signings and pointed to the quality of social houses provided in Kerry.

“We are fortunate to have quality construction companies whose experience and track record in the delivery of housing projects is second to none. This has enabled Kerry County Council to quickly progress projects such as these,” he said.

Mayor Kelleher also referenced the new building standards under which these houses will be constructed.

“Modern building standards have greatly improved over the past decade and those living in these new houses will benefit from high energy efficiency standards that will significantly reduce energy consumption,” he said.

Chief Executive of Kerry County Council, Moira Murrell, highlighted the fact that all 88 houses were due for completion before the end of the year.

“The provision of suitable housing for people all over Kerry is a key objective for this council.

“We have a large housing stock of over 4,000 social houses in Kerry and we are continually seeking ways to ensure that those looking for housing options are catered for, not just in the larger towns, but all around the county,” she said.

“Under the Rebuilding Ireland Programme, we have been set high targets for the provision of additional social housing and our aim is to achieve those targets, whether through build, acquisition or leasing,” Ms Murrell added.
